Inspector’s praise ‘ambitious vision’ at Oasis Academy Brislington in ‘good’ Ofsted report

The academy has been described as a place where students learn in a 'well-structured environment'.

‘Staff, parents and pupils can see how the school has improved’ – A local inclusive secondary school in the heart of South Bristol previously rated ‘Requires Improvement’ has been praised by school inspectors Ofsted after receiving a glowing report and is now ‘Good’ in all areas.

Oasis Academy Brislington, situated down Hungerford Road in Bristol say staff, parents and pupils are proud to belong to the school community.

Inspectors found students on roll enjoy working together with their teachers which in turn develops their character, talents, and interests.

Highlights from the report include:

  • “Pupils know staff have high expectations for them to do well.”
  • “Pupils learn in a well-structured environment. They know what is expected of them.”
  • “The headteacher has an ambitious vision for the school.”
  • “Curriculum leaders have implemented coherent and well thought our curriculums in each subject.”
  • “The curriculum is ambitious for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).”

The school principal has been praised for his ambitious vision for the academy saying: “leaders, with the support of the trust, have focused on improving the right things. Staff feel well supported. Early career teachers talk enthusiastically about the school’s support for them.”

Peter Knight, Principal at Oasis Academy Brislington, commented on the glowing report saying; “The whole of the Oasis Academy Brislington community are delighted with Ofsted’s ‘Good’ in all categories judgement. It is external confirmation of what all at the school have known for a while now, that together we are making rapid progress and creating a great school that our students so richly deserve.”

“I am so grateful to the staff, students and parents who have supported us over these last couple of years. Their support and dedication, and willingness to embrace change, are the foundations for the improvements we have achieved.”

Taking a look at the curriculum offer in the academy, Ofsted were impressed at the offer provided to students saying; “the school’s curriculum is ambitious, with nearly all pupils studying subject through to year 11 that will make them eligible for the English baccalaureate.”

They continued to praise leaders saying that they have implemented coherent and well thought out curriculums in each subject, and that they know their subjects well and have identified the most important knowledge for pupils to learn.

Phil Humphreys, Regional Director for South West & South Coast Secondaries at Oasis Community Learning, commented saying; “This is a fantastic report from Ofsted, and is everything that Peter and his team deserve after the excellent progress they have made.”

“The academy is on a journey of swift and sustainable improvement, and I am confident that the plans that Peter has in place means that the progress and attainment levels will continue to climb. The wider Oasis family of academies is extremely proud of what Oasis Academy Brislington has achieved.”

Oasis Academy Brislington was inspected under the new inspection framework on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st October 2021. It was previously graded as ‘Requires Improvement’ but is now graded as ‘Good’ across all areas, these being: the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.
