Welcome back to the new academic year. I write my first newsletter of 2018/19 having been privileged to address the whole academy at our first ever whole school gathering.
Welcome back to the new academic year. I write my first newsletter of 2018/19 having been privileged to address the whole academy at our first ever whole school gathering. The students where a credit to themselves and you as parents/carers in the way they conducted themselves during this most formal of gatherings.
As you might have already seen in the press (Bristol Evening Post) we celebrated record GCSE results in 2018, continuing our year on year trend of improved exam results and better student progress even with the new tougher examinations. Our academy’s results were some of the strongest in both the city and amongst all the other Oasis Secondary Academies across the country. Our students excelled across the board, with strong results in subjects ranging from Science to Religious Studies and Art.
Welcome to new Colleagues and Students
I would like to offer a warm welcome to all new members of the Oasis Academy Brislington community. We welcome our Year 7 students and hope that they enjoy the activities and events planned for their induction into our school. This year we are also fortunate in welcoming a number of new colleagues to the teaching staff:
- Gill Mercer - RSL Science
- Robert Twine - Science
- Kate Jackson - Science
- Tom Worthington - Science
- Chris Vaughn - Maths
- Kim Lane - Business Studies / ICT
- Neil Molitoris - English
- Harri Brookes - English
Various members of staff have new responsibilities and I will not try and list them all, but I will mention that Mrs Yasdi is on secondment to the Academy Leadership Team leading our Culture for Learning Strategy as Miss Pugh goes on maternity leave. Mr Smith has taken the leadership of Year 10 as SPL (Student Progress Leader) and Mr Scullion is the new Head of PE.
Our Key Themes for this Year
The following are the key focus for our year’s work, and form the academic backbone of the academy development plan:
- Building on the positive behaviours of students in lessons to create a culture of catching students doing well.
- Improve the amount of knowledge our students have by using every minute of every lesson productively.
- Develop the amount of knowledge that parents/carers have about their child's progress.
These focus areas support our vision of students with 'The confidence, skills and knowledge to stand as first among equals'.
This time of year is always exciting as we stand poised on the threshold of another year of academic endeavour, challenges and achievements. We look forward to working with you and your children, to make it another successful and satisfying year at Oasis Academy Brislington.
